Attention Tumblr Users: ABANDON SHIP!

As some of you may have already heard, Yahoo has acquired Tumblr for a whopping $1.1 Billion dollars. That’s great news for Tumblr co-founders Marco Arment and David Karp but maybe not such awesome news for Tumblr users. Now I’m not saying that things are going to change immediately  in fact I can’t say that because no one knows yet what Yahoo’s plans are with Tumblr beyond milking its users for ad revenue. What I am saying is that given Yahoo’s track record of shutting down its acquisitions (cough cough Del.icio.us, Geocities and Broadcast.com), Tumblr users may want to make sure they have their lifeboats at the ready.

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg spoke out last night with some really intriguing stats. He claims that once the news broke on Sunday, blog post transfers from Tumblr to WordPress rose from 400 to 600 per hour to over 72,000. That’s incredible and a great sign of things to come for the WordPress community. Being the WordPress fans that we are, this of course makes us very happy but also worries us. 72,000 new WordPress installs per hour means 72,000 new WordPress users that are going to be fumbling around the net, looking for help on how to, among other things, setup security, blog management, choose the best hosting for their new site.
