This Week @ WPUniversity: Plugin Updates, ManageWP.org, Online Meetups

ManageWP Preview

Hard to believe that we’re already 1/2 of the way through August! This summer has flown right by.

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:

1. What We’ve Learned & Where We’re Going

WPUniversity Asking Too Much

Earlier this week we looked back at what we’ve learned from developing our own plugin – the assumptions, the challenges, the decisions. We announced some major changes to how the plugin is activated and what will be free at launch. Check out the post.

2. ManageWP.org = Digg for WordPress News

Manage WP Preview

When our team first heard about ManageWP.org we tried guessing what the intent was. The truth came out this week: it’s a site for users to submit links and vote on them, a la Reddit, Digg, Newsvine, Hacker News, and so many others. (Side note: I totally called this one!)

3. New Presentation Shortcodes on WordPress.com

WordPress.com Presentation Shortcodes

While we don’t often talk about WordPress.com, you can’t argue with the fact that WordPress.com is the WordPress experience for many users. We were excited to see the new Presentations plugin get unveiled because it keeps everything under the WordPress umbrella. No need to pull in another service to display your slide decks!

4. MeetWP: Online WordPress Meetups via Google+

MeetWP.me

WordPress meetups are a great way to meet other people in your local WordPress community. But what if where you live doesn’t have an active local WordPress scene? Or what if you just can’t make it to the meetups due to scheduling? This is where MeetWP steps in, as the first-ever online WordPress meetup. The next one takes place on August 22nd.

5. New Walkthrough: Changing the Default User Role

New User Default Role

The default user role sets the level of access each new user will receive without having to assign it manually. By default, WordPress sets the new user role to Subscriber. Changing the User role makes sure you’re only giving the level of access a user requires and not allowing every user to have full Administrator access to your site.
