This Week @ WPUniversity: Free Workshops, Plugin Updates, WordPress 3.6 Rumours

WPUniversity Weekly Wrap Up July 12

It’s been a busy (and wet) week at WPUniversity! Here’s what we’ve been working on, and checking out, over the last seven days:

1. Free WordPress Workshop #3: Posts & Pages

We’ve been running free, weekly WordPress workshops at the Ryerson Digital Media Zone in downtown Toronto. This week’s workshop was all about posts and plugins. We had a full house! Thanks to everyone who showed up. You can check out our Eventbrite page for a full list of upcoming sessions. We’ll be talking about Themes & Plugins next week.

2. Beta Updates & Plugin Fixes

We’ve tackled some more bugs this week with the WPUniversity plugin and added another walkthrough. Beta feedback is being collected via UserVoice. Not in the beta? Go sign up! Want to play with the plugin first? You can check out our demo.

3. WordPress News Sites: Ch-ch-changes

WP Daily went offline after building a lot of momentum, catching everyone off guard. Then WPCandy made their first post in months. Post Status went through a major redesign. All of this happened in a matter of days. (What’s going on?!) We’re also seeing growth in WordPress podcasts: Dradcast, WP Watercooler, MattReport, and the upcoming WP Bacon.

4. Premium coming to WordPress SEO by Yoast

Joost de Valk recently announced that their very popular (and very useful) WordPress SEO plugin will be getting a Premium version in August. Customers will get access to direct support from the Yoast team, and the Premium plugin will include some additional features (TBD). Related: The subject of support for WordPress plugins has been stirring up some debate lately.

5. WordPress 3.6 release candidate today?

Rumour has it that we’ll see WordPress 3.6 RC1 today. That’d be great… but will it actually happen? We’re already over two months behind schedule on the next major release of WordPress. We’re hopeful, but slightly jaded. 🙁 Nonetheless, props to the Core team for continuing to hack away.
