This Week @ WPUniversity: More Workshops, Dropping Tables, Uber Delivers

Wrap Up - Drop Table

Last week was wet. This week was hot. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

1. WordPress Workshops: A Recap

Over these last four weeks we’ve walked novices through the wonderful world of WordPress. Week 1: We started off with the basics of getting a WordPress site up and running. Week 2: We explored the dashboard and /wp-admin/ administration screens. Week 3: Working with content (posts & pages). Week 4: Customizing WordPress with plugins & themes.

The four-week series starts up again next Tuesday with a return to WordPress basics. You can find all of our upcoming workshops, seminars, events, etc. on our Eventbrite page: wpuniversity.eventbrite.ca

2. More Plugin Updates

We released a new interactive walkthrough this week to all of our WPUniversity plugin testers: disabling comments site-wide. (Not on the beta? Go sign up!)

In other plugin news, we’ve made a big breakthrough on the tech side. We can now work with iframes! This was a big hurdle. Now that we’ve conquered it, we can deliver more useful walkthroughs that interact with things like the visual editor.

3. Dropping Tables

If there’s an eternal truth in life, it’s this: stuff happens. And stuff certainly happened today. There was a little accident with a database table being dropped (whoops) and us having no backups of the database in question (double-whoops).

We’ll recover, of course – it’ll just take some extra work over the weekend. Note to self? We should’ve installed Backup Buddy from iThemes on this particular project. Lesson learned!

We’re not alone, though. Check out what happened to Pixar:

4. WordPress 3.6 RC1

Last week we asked if WordPress 3.6 RC1 was really going to be released. We had our doubts. Luckily we were proven wrong! WordPress 3.6 RC1 was released last Friday, albeit they waited until the end of the day to make it happen.

5. Uber Delivers!

Ice cream truck on demand. How awesome is that? The Uber crew have been driving around Toronto (and other cities) delivering cold treats to overheated citizens. Some of the Ryerson DMZ crew (us included) got in on the action. Thanks, Uber!

That’s all for us this week. Enjoy the weekend!
