Pressgram Launches, Democratize Publishing

Pressgram

Time flies when you’re working-working-working! The first week of September has come and gone and there’s already an autumn chill in the air. Here’s what caught our eye this week:

Pressgram Launches + Contest!

Pressgram has launched in the iTunes store and our good buddy Chris Lema wants this launch weekend to be a smashing success. So he’s holding a little contest. The prize? An iPad Mini. The judge? Chris’s wife. The rules? Pretty straightforward:

Download and install the app. Come back here and post (in the comments) your username (so I can follow you) Tweet this out. (you’ll see the tweet before you send it) Take at least one photo with Pressgram

You can read more about the launch and contest over on Chris’s blog.

Democratize Publishing

Matt Mullenweg is a busy guy. He’s speaking at the upcoming GigaOM Structure Europe conference and recently had a sitdown with The Guardian:

“We use our cloud services to do things that we couldn’t do in a distributed fashion. A lot of the early adoption of WordPress was actually from thousands and millions of individually hosted instances, so a lot of the people who ran WordPress were on their own. But the cool thing is that we created this plug in called JetPack which basically allows you to get the control of your own hosting, whether that’s on premise or on servers like Go Daddy or Blue Host, with the power of the things WordPress.com and Automattic can do from the cloud.”

bbPress 2.4 Released

The latest version of bbPress is now available for download:

bbPress 2.4 introduces hierarchical replies, allowing you to pick between paginated topics or a hierarchy (similar to WordPress’s comments.) There are improvements all around, including: pretty URL’s for search results pages, code posting, an Akismet admin UI, BuddyPress Group Forum integration, general query improvements, PHP 5.4 E_STRICT notices, theme compatibility, author metaboxes, some settings API changes, and more!

A Look at WordPress.com Activity in August

WordPress is a brilliant piece of software, no question there. But how are you using it? Get some inspiration from WordPress.com, a massive community of passionate bloggers and writers.

Recently, Michelle offered a snapshot of WordPress.com activity in July. The verdict? You’re all busy bees and publish a lot. We’re proud of our community’s accomplishments this past month, too — August certainly sizzled. Here’s a glimpse at what’s been in the works at WordPress.com, through news and numbers.

An Oral History of Apple

From Fast Company:

If there is one thing that CEO Tim Cook doesn’t want people to know, it’s what dwells behind his company’s “signature.” As a result, most efforts to explain design at Apple end up reducing a complex 37-year history to bromides about simplicity, quality, and perfection–as if those were ambitions unique to Apple alone. So Fast Company set out to remedy that deficiency through an oral history of Apple’s design, a decoding of the signature as told by the people who helped create it.

The series starts off with design & 1992.
